In Iowa, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the most jobs, the number of jobs in the manufacturing, mining and retail industries dropped by nearly 20,000 over the past year.
The BLS said the loss in jobs in those industries accounted for about 11 percent of the total jobs lost in the state during that time.
Iowa lost more than 7,000 jobs in manufacturing during the past 12 months, the largest decline in manufacturing jobs in any state, according to the BLS.
The unemployment rate in Iowa rose to 7.1 percent in December from 7.0 percent in November, according the B.L.S.
The BLS reported that employment in manufacturing has been flat for the past three years, while the number in manufacturing of all other jobs has fallen for three consecutive years.
The manufacturing industry lost more jobs in January than it did in any month in the last four years.
Iowa has also lost more manufacturing jobs than any other state.
About 9.2 percent of manufacturing jobs have been lost in Iowa, according a January report from the Iowa Employment Development Center.
